The corporation will operate one flight a day, using Airbus A321 aircraft. It will depart Ha Noi at 2:30 pm and leave Can Tho City at 5:30. One-way fares will range from VND900,000 to VND1.7 million, depending on the class. A promotional fare of VND750,000 is available between the launch day and Jan. 10.
On Dec. 22, Vietnam Airlines operated a test flight landing at Can Tho Airport. The official opening of the airport will take place on Jan. 3.
Construction of the airport began in May this year. The first stage of the airport includes a 2,400-meter runway and a terminal able to accommodate two A320 aircraft at a time and 500,000 passengers per year.
Construction of the second phase is set for completion in late 2010 when the airport can serve two million passengers annually. Building the two phases will cost VND5 trillion (US$294 million).
In related news, Jetstar Pacific Airlines is completing formalities to operate flights to the airport, according to Mr. Pham Manh Khien, director of the Can Tho Airport Authority.
Indochina Airlines, Vietnam’s first privately-owned airline, is the third carrier to offer domestic flights in the country after Vietnam Airlines and Jetstar Pacific.
About 180 kilometers south of Ho Chi Minh City, Can Tho is a center of the Mekong Delta, which plays an important role in the national economy
