Flooding takes 11 lives in central Vietnam _English_Xinhua

HANOI, Oct. 20 (Xinhua) -- Heavy rain and subsequent flooding in central Vietnam have claimed 11 lives, including seven in Quang Nam province and three in Thua Thien-Hue province, the Vietnam News Agency reported on Monday.
The floods also damaged 12,000 houses and around 11,500 hectares of paddy fields and cash crops, swept away 220 heads of cattle, and inundated 46 hectares of fish farms in the region, the agency cited figures from the National Steering Committee for Storm and Flood Control as saying.
Major roads in Thua Thien-Hue were submerged under 0.5 to 1.2 meters of flood waters while many sections on roads in Quang Nam province were damaged.
Water levels of rivers in central provinces from Nghe An to Thua Thien-Hue will continue to rise, the agency cited the National Center for Hydro-meteorological Forecasting as saying.
The Center also warned those provinces of possible flash flood and landslides in mountainous districts and low areas.

Tips on Travel to Vietnam

It's always warm in Southeast Asia apart from high mountains, so leave the heavy clothing at home. Cotton and breathable fabrics are always better than synthetics -- although cotton does wrinkle a lot when traveling! December through April is roughly the dry season in that region, although it can still rain a little. December is a good time to go in terms of temperature -- cooler than in the humid summertime. Either way, wearing more clothing (shirt sleeves and long pants) is always more respectful towards the Asian culture, especially when visiting temples and rural areas.
