Many overseas Vietnamese singers return home to not only raise their voices but also to do business.
While Vietnamese audiences still miss golden voices of the past, there is no reason for overseas Vietnamese not to return and sing. Fees for Tuan Ngoc, Elvis Phuong, Le Thu, Huong Lan, Khanh Hoa, Le Uyen are said to be equal to those of local stars (VND15 million or $900/solo show at a night club or two songs in a live show).
Singer Elvis Phuong said overseas Vietnamese singers can live on pay from night clubs. Elvis Phuong’s working schedule in Vietnam is so full that his wife is afraid that her husband has no time to relax.
Returning to HCM City with two shows of Pham Duy songs (May 9-10), Tuan Ngoc and Le Thu told listeners that they plan to return to Vietnam to live and sing. Previously, senior singer Anh Khoa stayed in HCM City for a period of time and sang at some night clubs. The singer also wishes to return and sing in Vietnam.
Elvis Phuong, Tuan Ngoc, Duy Quang and Thai Chau will sing for a show organised by the Overseas Vietnamese Club in HCM City. Both Tuan Ngoc and Thai Chau said they will appear more frequently on Vietnamese stages in the coming time.
Besides getting money from singing, many overseas Vietnamese singers have extra jobs. Elvis Phuong is one of several overseas Vietnamese singers who returned home very early. He now owns a villa in An Phu Dong, a residential area for overseas Vietnamese in HCM City.
Elvis Phuong’s neighbours are overseas Vietnamese singer Anh Quy, who was very famous in the past, Huong Lan and Ai Van.
Duy Minh, a member of the previous The Dreamers group, is living in Vietnam with his father, song writer Pham Duy. He said: “The music environment in Vietnam is very attractive to overseas Vietnamese singers. The life in the motherland is also very cool so I think many overseas Vietnamese singers will return home in the future.”
Singer Le Uyen, who is known as Le Uyen & Phuong, recently returned to Vietnam to take part in the Charming Vietnam show, and affirmed: “I will return to Vietnam to live because the life here is very easy.” She plans to buy a house in the resort city of Da Lat and open a restaurant.
Singer Giao Linh is now successful in business with a rice and noodle restaurant on Cach Mang Thang Tam road, HCM City. Meanwhile, Huong Lan is busy with a restaurant in Binh Thanh district. She has just built a fish farm and orchard in the southern province of Binh Phuoc.
Singer Duy Quang is managing a Pho 24 restaurant and a night club named Tinh Ca in HCM City. Singer and song writer Duc Huy is satisfied with his job at his studio while Duy Cuong is busy with various music projects.
