Foreign direct investment in Vietnam jumped to more than US$20 billion last year from $12 billion in 2006, with companies including Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., the world’s largest contract electronics manufacturer, and Compal Electronics Inc. taking advantage of the country’s cheaper labor costs.Intel Corp., the world’s biggest semiconductor maker, started building a $1 billion factory in Ho Chi Minh City in March, and Taipei-based Hon Hai plans to invest $5 billion in five years to make parts for personal computers, digital cameras and mobile phones.
