Vietnamese student twice honoured in UK
Vietnamese student Nguyen Chi Hieu was selected the top Economics student by 30 leading universities in the UK after he graduated from the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) with top grade in 2007.
This was the second time Mr Hieu had been honoured in the UK during his three-year course at the LSE. In 2004, he won the title of the UK’s top A-level student and a gold medal by the Assessment & Qualifications Alliance (AQA).
In 2006, the Binh Dinh province-born student outstripped thousands of competitors to win the Goldman Sachs Global Leaders Award for the 100 most outstanding second-year students in the world, an annual award by the International Institute of Education (IIE).
“Five years ago, a scholarship from Cambridge Tutors College (CTC) – just like a fortune cookie – brought me to the UK,” Mr Hieu said. He got a full scholarship for a two-year A-level course at the LSE after coming first among 104 pupils who sat for the CTC scholarship tests at the Ho Chi Minh City-based Le Hong Phong High School for Gifted Pupils with an overall score of 70/100.
Although he had to take part-time jobs to support himself, Mr Hieu still topped the list of 330,000 A-level students to earn a LSE scholarship for continued studies.
Last September, he decided to choose Standford University of the US among other prestigious universities like LSE, Cambridge, Columbia and Northwester to follow a five-year PhD Economics course also under a full scholarship worth US $375,000. He planned to specialise in finance after completing his PhD degree.
Talking about his key to success, Mr Hieu said he always balances the amounts of time for study and other activities. “Charity activities and community development projects, while making my student life more interesting, have helped me have opportunities to travel to many places and get acquainted with many friends as well as become more independent and grown-up,” he said.
Hieu’s friends admire him not only for his outstanding achivements in study but also for his other talents as a music show director, a singer, a piano player and an MC. (VNA)
