First international puppetry festival opens in Hanoi

Nhan Dan Online- The first international puppetry festival in Vietnam opened tonight in Hanoi.
Addressing the opening ceremony, Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Hoang Tuan Anh highlighted the significance of the event, considering this an opportunity for Vietnamese artists to introduce and promote the interesting and beautiful aspects of Vietnamese puppetry art to international friends. “It is also a chance for Vietnam’s artists to learn from essences of puppetry from other countries so that they can continue to create new art works with in depth ideology, high aesthetics and artistic value to contribute to building and developing advanced Vietnamese culture with strong national identity,” said the minister.
Also at the opening, audience enjoyed two puppetry acts by the Vietnam National Puppetry Theatre and the Tof Theatre from Belgium.

The acts ‘Story of To He’ by the Vietnam National Puppetry Theatre. The act is the modern puppetry combined with performers and installation arts. The man-size puppets of Belgian artists presented traditional puppet manipulation techniques and allows the spectators to see the puppeteers.
Being held in Hanoi from February 16 -23, the festival attracts the participation of 12 international troupes from Egypt, Belgium, Brazil, Israel, Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand, Sweden, China and Singapore. Vietnam joins the festival with eight acts by the Vietnam National Puppetry Theatre, the Thang Long Puppetry Theatre, and troupes from Ho Chi Minh City, Haiphong and Dak Lak.
Performances will be given at Hanoi Opera House, Thang Long Theatre, the Military Theatre, and Children’s Palace. Various kinds of puppetry such as water, rod, hang, string shadow, mask and black stage puppetry will be seen at the festival.
The jury board members include Painter Ngo Quynh Giao, ex-director of the Vietnam national Puppetry Theatre; Miguel Arreche, Secretary General of UNIMA (Union of International Marionette); Dalia Yaffe Maayan, director of Train Theatre in Israel; Tupuk Sutrisno, Secretary General of ASEAN Puppetry Association and Director of Vietnam National Puppetry Theatre Vuong Duy Bien.
According to organisers, the number of prizes shall not exceed one third of the participating items with gold, silver and bronze medals awarded to acts. Some other prizes will also be given to excellent directors, authors, musicians, painters, art designers and young actors with unique creations.
