LookAtVietnam – Investing up to $187 million to build a traffic center, HCM City authorities expect that the center would help them deal with congestion.

HCM City’s vice chair Nguyen Huu Tin has asked the Ministry of Planning and Investment–to add this project in the list of works that will be built by France’s official development aid (ODA) in 2012.

This project will have to be approved by the government.

With the capital of $187 million, the project developer will install traffic equipment at more than 1,000 crossroads, build a traffic control center to manage buses, the traffic light system, collect toll, etc. in HCM City.

Deputy Director Le Toan of the HCM City Department of Transport says that this is one of the city’s major projects, and the “break-through” solution to deal with traffic jams. If the project is approved, it will be implemented in three phases, from 2012 to 2017.

Traffic experts say that congestion in HCM City is getting serious and the city needs such a modern traffic control center. With this automatic center, pressure on traffic police will be reduced.

HCM City has installed cameras at some crossroads and roundabouts but these cameras work independently.

According to the municipal Department of Transport, there are more than 1,400 crossroads in the city. Around 590 crossroads have had traffic lights. The city has two independent traffic light systems, which are managed by traffic police and the urban traffic management bureau.

All 159 traffic lights ran by traffic police do not work well.
