17 great masters to join HDBanh Chess 2012

LookAtVietnam – Big names like Le Quang Liem, Ni Hua (China), Kharisma (Indonesia), Narayanan (India), Merab (Georgia) and nearly 100 chess players will compete for the $10,000 championship of the HDBank 2012.

More than 50 Vietnamese and 40 international chess players will participate in the event, in HCM City from March 2-7. They will compete in nine rounds.
This is the largest international chess competition held in Vietnam in 2012.
Of nearly 100 players, there are 17 great international masters and 20 international masters, including Le Quang Liem, Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son, Dao Thien Hai, Tu Hoang Thong of Vietnam, Ni Hua of China, Sukandar Irine Kharisma of Indonesia, Gopal Geetha Narayanan of India and Gagunashvili Merab of Georgia.

The organizing board will present $10,000 to the champion and 20 prizes to male players, three for female players and one for the best young player.
Mai Ba Hung, deputy director of HCM City Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, said that since 2011, with HDBank’s sponsorship, this event will become a tournament in FIDE’s system.
Before the tournament, the organizing board held a competition between Great master Le Quang Liem and 20 chess players. Finally, no player could defeat Le Quang Liem. The only draw match was for Nguyen Ngoc Son Ha.

Tips on Travel to Vietnam

It's always warm in Southeast Asia apart from high mountains, so leave the heavy clothing at home. Cotton and breathable fabrics are always better than synthetics -- although cotton does wrinkle a lot when traveling! December through April is roughly the dry season in that region, although it can still rain a little. December is a good time to go in terms of temperature -- cooler than in the humid summertime. Either way, wearing more clothing (shirt sleeves and long pants) is always more respectful towards the Asian culture, especially when visiting temples and rural areas.
