Cambodia will suffer from global recession

Phnom Penh, November 5, 2008 AKP - Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister Sok An met with a delegation of International Monetary Fund (IMF) led by David Cowen, director for Asia-Pacific Department of IMF in Phnom Penh on Nov. 3.
During the meeting, Deputy Prime Minister Sok An informed Mr Cowen that there were many successful points in oil exploration in the Cambodian sea and the Cambodian government has granted concessions to the US Chevron-Oil Company. "We hope to get oil in the near further," he said.
At the meeting, both sides also discussed the global recession which has affected the Cambodian economy.
H.E. Sok An, who is also minister in charge of the Office of the Council of Ministers, asked IMF to predict its impact on Cambodian economy.
In reply, David Cowen said three main fields including garments, tourism and agriculture contribute to Cambodia's economic growth. But, they will suffer from the effects of the global recession. The Cambodia's economic growth will be then around only 7 per cent in this year and in 2009, according to IMF prediction. - AKP (By Mr Ou Sokha)
