Heart disease rates in top Asian countries are rising frighteningly fast, cardiologists say.
Chinese cardiologist Prof Runlin Gao warned a meeting of experts in Shanghai that heart disease rates in China, India, Indonesia and Malaysia were skyrocketing thanks to fast food, smoking, cars and other symbols of affluence, the Australian Associated Press (AAP) reported yesterday.
With Aidilfitri celebrations on in Muslim countries that see many open houses and countless feasts, people will have to consume in moderation and be mindful of what they eat.
Gao said in China alone, 100 million people were at risk of heart disease, with one person dying every 15 seconds.
He said Asian people were more genetically prone to piling on dangerous stomach fat which put pressure on the heart.
"(Disease) rates are really rocketing up ... but the understanding of the problem is painfully low among the people on the ground," AAP quoted Gao as saying.
