Top swimmer loses ticket to Olympic 08

Top Vietnamese male swimmer Nguyen Huu Viet has lost the chance to go to the 2008 Olympics in Beijing after he failed in the men’s 100 breaststroke category at the Open Malaysian Swimming Tournament 2008.

At the same time, Vietnam received more bad news when female fencer Le Dung and springboard player Thanh Tra also failed to earn a ticket to the Olympics.

With a time of 1.04.18 minutes in the qualifier round and 1.04.35 minutes in the final round (ranking 4th for the entire race), Huu Viet’s record at the Open Malaysia Swimming Tournament is far from the B standard of Olympics 2008 (1.03.72 minutes) and below his own record set at 24th SEA Games (1.03.83 minutes).

At the National Swimming Championship 2007, Huu Viet broke the national record for men’s 100m breaststroke (1.03.63 minutes) but as the tournament is not in the International Swimming Federation’s playing system, Huu Viet’s record was not recognised.

According to Vice Chairman cum Secretary General of the Vietnam Olympic Committee, the failure of Vietnamese top sportsmen like Huu Viet, Le Dung or Thanh Tra is a failure of methodology, not strategy.

Giang also said that weightlifter Hoang Anh Tuan has only a 99% chance to attend the Olympics, not 100%. He didn’t explain about the 1% remaining, but according to some sources, Hoang Anh Tuan still has to wait for doping test results.
