China to set up 1 million temporary homes by Aug. 10 :

The Chinese government now plans to put up temporary housing for 250,000 survivors of the Sichuan Province earthquake within a month and for 1 million in 2-1/2 months, but disaster management experts predict problems ahead.
The immediate issue is how to secure accommodation for the 5 million people made homeless by the earthquake in Sichuan Province.
The Chinese government plans to deploy soldiers and construction workers across the country to help put up temporary housing.
This work first started in Dujiangyan in the province with the authorities setting aside about 200,000 square meters for 40,000 to 50,000 people. About 6,000 workers are working around the clock in the largest lot at the corner of an industrial complex.
The government set Aug. 10 as the deadline for constructing the first 1 million facilities, advancing the initial date by one month, in apparent consideration for the Beijing Summer Olympic Games, which start on Aug. 8.
Under its plans, the government will allocate a plot of about 20 square meters per household although smaller residences are also being constructed.
Also, the locations of the temporary accommodations and the materials used vary considerably depending on the area.
Some experts predict problems will emerge when people become aware of these disparities in the quality of the allocated temporary residences.
As the lots were acquired hastily, problems may also arise over the forced evacuation of residents and the construction of temporary residences in remote areas, they said
