Canada's Asian Coast Development Ltd group will start building work on a major resort and casino in southern Vietnam at an investment of $4.2 billion as soon as this week.
Construction of the group's Ho Tram Strip complex would start on Saturday in Ba Ria-Vung Tau province, 125 km (78 miles) southeast of Ho Chi Minh City, the Vietnamese government said in a statement.
The complex would have two five-star hotels with 2,300 rooms, Vietnam's first Las Vegas-style casino, with more than 500 slot machines and nearly 90 table games, the Canadian group said on the project's website (www.hotramstrip.com).
Canada now ranks 21st among countries and territories investing in communist-ruled Vietnam, which allows only foreigners to play in local casinos to attract tourists, mainly Chinese and Koreans.
Vietnam received 1.7 million foreign visitors in the first four months of 2008, up 16 percent from the same period last year, government figures show.
