Vietnamese female footballers celebrate at the 2007 SEA Games
Ho Chi Minh City will host the 2008 AFC Women’s Asian Cup football finals from May 28 to June 8, Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) Secretary General Tran Quoc Tuan announced Saturday.
It will be the first time the tournament is played in Vietnam.
The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) said the drawing ceremony for the eight teams in the finals will be held in HCMC on April 18.
With defending champion China and runner-up Australia chosen as seeds for the two groups, six others include the 2006 Asian Games (Asiad) champion North Korea, Asiad runners-up Japan, South Korea, Thailand, Taiwan and host nation Vietnam.
Vietnam was appointed host of the event after successfully co-hosting the 2007 Asian men’s football championship and the qualifiers of the 2008 Asian women’s football championship in HCMC in March.
AFC also recognized stable development of Vietnamese women’s football in recent years with the national team reaching number two in the Southeast Asian Games.
