Forty-nine paintings by Vietnamese artists will be auctioned by reputed Sotheby’s auctioneer in Hong Kong on April 8.
Mok Kim Chuan, in charge of the Southeast Asian painting room of Sotheby’s, predicted that the Vietnamese paintings would be sold for a total value of over $1.5 million.
Chuan also said that Vu Cao Dam’s “Small talk in the garden among elegant peoples” painting (1939) would bring in the highest price, from $129,000 to $193,000.
Paintings of Vietnamese artists of the old generation like Le Pho, Vu Cao Dam, Mai Trung Thu and Nguyen Gia Tri are attracting international collectors. Favourite artworks are often silk paintings drawn before or during the Second World War.
Recently paintings in the traditional style by some contemporary Vietnamese painters like Nguyen Thiet Binh, Le Thiet Cuong and Le Minh Duc have also been auctioned internationally.
Le Pho’s “Mother’s heart” holds the record high price at auctions of Vietnamese paintings: it went for $364,469 at an auction last September.
