Rangers have illegal loggers on the run in Quang Nam

Forest rangers in the central province of Quang Nam Friday seized dozens of cubic meters of illegally logged timber during raids in some mountain districts.
At 2 a.m. Friday, a group of four rangers led by Dang Van Hong from the province’s Forest Management Bureau, discovered a large quantity of logs near a river while on a patrol of Ro Village in Nam Giang District.
Another group seized dozens of cubic meters in Dai Son Commune.
A ranger said much of the timber had been hidden in the Vu Gia River and it had been hard work to bring it to land.
On Wednesday, after receiving tip-off from locals, rangers raided a village in Thanh My Town and confiscated over 15 cubic meters of wood.
Hong said when the officers had approached the timber cache in Muc Village, dozens of people, presumably illegal loggers, armed with knives, had said they were ready to fight for the logs.
The rangers had to seek police assistance to take them in.
Another ranger, Nguyen Hong Anh, said the mobile forest management station seized over 5 cubic meters of illegal logs from a truck in Nam Giang District Tuesday.
The bureau began coordinated raids of mountainous localities 10 days ago to crack down on illegal loggers.
