Institute tests workers for radiation poisoning in Quang Ngai

Sixty-three workers in central Quang Ngai Province were Wednesday sent to a nuclear research institute to test for radioactive contamination after high radioactivity levels were found near their work place.
The state-run Vietnam Machinery Erection Corporation (LILAMA Corporation) workers were panicked by the risk of radioactive contamination at a Dung Quat oil refinery site on Tuesday.
Labor safety officials from French-based Technip Group, the head of an international consortium in charge of Dung Quat refinery’s four major packages, ran spot checks on Tuesday and discovered radioactivity near the work site exceeded safe levels.
LILAMA workers also recorded the results of the checks on their cell phones and said the level was 47.80 mili sivert (mSv).
But LILAMA officials said they recorded the level at 18 mSv.
EMETC, the joint stock company responsible for checking for welding deterioration at the site by using radioactive material, said earlier it always kept the radioactivity at a safe level (7.5 mSv).
LILAMA Deputy Head Nguyen Dinh Hai said EMETC had pledged to ensure radiation safety.
EMETC might exceed regulations to speed up their work, Hai said
