DOH warns travelers to Vietnam of cholera risk
CNATAIPEI, Taiwan -- The Department of Health (DOH) yesterday urged people to be on the alert during any trips to Vietnam as 85 confirmed cases of cholera have been reported in that country.
Chou Chih-hao, deputy director of the DOH's Centers for Disease Control, said that with the increasing exchanges between Taiwan and Vietnam, people visiting the Southeast Asian country should wash their hands frequently and refrain from eating uncooked food.
Chou said the cases of cholera, including fatalities, had been reported mainly in 10 areas in northern Vietnam, including Hanoi and Hai Phong.
Among the 85 confirmed cases, 44 people lived in Hanoi, all of whom reported that they had eaten uncooked food or vegetables, Chou said, noting that Vietnamese authorities had found vibrio cholerae, the bacteria that causes the disease, in rivers, ponds and vegetables.

Tips on Travel to Vietnam

It's always warm in Southeast Asia apart from high mountains, so leave the heavy clothing at home. Cotton and breathable fabrics are always better than synthetics -- although cotton does wrinkle a lot when traveling! December through April is roughly the dry season in that region, although it can still rain a little. December is a good time to go in terms of temperature -- cooler than in the humid summertime. Either way, wearing more clothing (shirt sleeves and long pants) is always more respectful towards the Asian culture, especially when visiting temples and rural areas.
