Calisto signs on as Vietnam head coach

Portuguese Henrique Calisto Monday signed a contract with the Vietnam Football Federation to become head coach for the Vietnamese national football team, replacing Austrian Alfred Riedl stepping down last December.
Under the two-year agreement, Calisto, 54, will instruct the national team and receive around US$13,000 per month with possible bonuses depending on the team’s results.
If the new coach can help the national football team and the country’s U23 team start at this year’s AFF Cup, co-hosted by Thailand and Indonesia, and the next SEA Games, to take place in Laos in 2009, he will be able to extend his contract, according to a Vietnam Football Federation official.
This year, Calisto will work with the team during three time periods.
In the first, from May 26 to June 5, Calisto aims to train the team for international friendly matches.
The second stage, from September 15 to October 6, will prepare the team for the Ho Chi Minh City football tournament where international teams are invited to compete.
The most important stage, from October 11 to December 25, will train the team for the October 21 to 25 Agribank Cup and the November 15 to December 21 AFF Cup.
Calisto started working in Vietnam seven years ago as coach of the Dong Tam Long An team in the Mekong Delta.
Prior to that, he served as the country’s national coach in 2002.
His most notable achievements include leading Dong Tam Long An to victory in the V-League in 2005 and 2006.
Vietnam has been without a coach since December, when Alfred Riedl stepped down after a disappointing performance at the 2007 Southeast Asian Games in Thailand.
