Vietnam's first Stem Cell banks opens

Vietnam’s first stem cell bank opens Sunday, the result of a deal between Vietnam’s Mekophar Co. and Singapore’s CordLabs Co. to transfer technology to subdivide and protect stem cells from babies’ umbilical cords.
Mekophar Chairwoman Huynh Thi Lan said many diseases, such as blood cancer and diabetics, could be treated using stem cells.
As well as storing umbilical cord stem cells for research and treatment purposes, the bank is to receive samples of newborns’ umbilical cords that can be used for treatment of diseases later in life, Lan said.
The bank is able to receive 3,600 samples of stem cells a year for storage for up to 21 years.
