Vietnam says favorable conditions needed for solving Iran issue

Vietnam, in deciding to vote in favor of the UN Security Council draft resolution on the Iran nuclear issue, is strongly convinced that favorable conditions must be created for the peaceful solution of the issue.
The United Nations Security Council on March 3 passed a resolution on the Iran nuclear issue with 14 votes in favor and one abstention.
Addressing the Security Council session before the vote, Ambassador Le Luong Minh, the permanent representative of Vietnam, stressed that as a responsible party to the Treaty on Non-proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), Vietnam attaches great importance to all three major pillars of the Treaty, namely non-proliferation of nuclear weapons, respect for the rights of all the parties to the peaceful use of nuclear energy and the pursuit of each of the parties to ending the nuclear arms race and to nuclear disarmament.
Ambassador Minh declared, “Deciding to vote in favor of the draft resolution mentioned above, we are strongly convinced that favorable conditions must be created for the peaceful solution of the Iran nuclear issue, including cessation of hostile policies against Iran, assurance of Iran’s legitimate security interests and respect for the right of Iran to use nuclear energy for peaceful purposes.
We also believe that the establishment of a nuclear weapon-free-zone in the Middle East in accordance with relevant resolutions of the United Nations General Assembly and the adherence by all States in the region to the NPT will be positive steps in this direction.”
