The United Nations is willing to further work with the Vietnamese Government to ensure the recently-adopted domestic violence prevention law is implemented effectively, a UN representative said a day ahead of International Women’s Day (March 8).
“The promulgation of the law is a great achievement, and the leadership of the Vietnamese Government in taking this initiative is exemplary,” Ian Howie, co-chair of the UN Gender Theme Group and Representative of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) said on March 7 in a press release.
Vietnam is one of only 89 countries in the world to have passed domestic violence legislation. The National Assembly passed the Law on Domestic Violence Prevention and Control in November 2007 and the law is due to come into effect in July 2008.
A number of Vietnamese government agencies have been designated with legal responsibilities for different aspects of the law, and through its Joint Programme on Gender Equality, the UN is supporting these agencies to apply, monitor, evaluate and report on the law, according to the press release.
