Operation Smile begins annual dental mission

Around 5,000 children and young adults in Hue and Ha Noi received free dental check-ups under American NGO Operation Smile’s 12 th annual Dental Mission to Viet Nam which began on March 19.The mission, which will go on until the 29 th , involves more than 30 dental professionals from the US, including oral surgeons, endodontists, paediatric dentists, general dentists, and students from the University of Maryland. In Ha Noi, it is being held at the Viet Nam-Cuba Hospital and Ha Noi Medicine and Pharmacy University . In Hue , children received dental care at Operation Smile’s Comprehensive Care Centre. The volunteers said they considered the event an opportunity to share their experiences in dental care with their local colleagues.Dr. Daniel Taub from Philadelphia , one of the team leaders, said: “ I always glean interesting experiences from Vietnamese experts during my missions to Viet Nam . This is the 13 th time I am coming to the country. It recognise many things have improved.”General Dentist D. Gioffre Jr., who is on his 10 th mission, said in a programme like this he and other experts hoped to treat every child needing their help, but it was hard. The best solution was to provide patients knowledge about dental care and improve local doctors’ professional knowledge, he added.Every person screened at the clinics is given a toothbrush and toothpaste, and told about the importance of oral hygiene.
