North-South railway fares to increase 7-15% in early April

Ticket fares on North-South trains will be officially adjusted from April 1st under the regulation raising the ceiling level and holding the lowest level the same, announced the Vietnam Railway Corporation. In particular, the TN1 and TN2 trains will keep the current price level of 420,000 VND a ticket for hard seat. Tickets for other Thong Nhat trains will increase by 7-15 percent. Tickets on the Hanoi – Ho Chi Minh route will have largest increase, such as SE3/ SE4 trains at 1,148,000 VND a ticket and TN3/TN4 trains at 516,000 VND a ticket for hard seats. Moreover, from April 1, tickets for Thong Nhat Trains with the TN designation will not include food cost like trains with the SE signs. Because the number of passengers is forecast to decrease and fuel cost to increase, the Vietnam Railway Corporation has decided not to operate Thong Nhat trains during summer 2008. However, Hanoi and Saigon passenger transport companies will run local trains if passenger numbers suddenly increase.
