4,500 representatives register for UN Day of Vesak

More than 4,500 representatives of 600 Buddhist delegations from 70 countries and territories have registered to attend the United Nations Day of Vesak in Vietnam this May.
This was announced at the second preparatory meeting in Hanoi on March 19 held by the International Organising Committee for the UN Day of Vesak.
The organising committee is planning to hold a landmark Buddhist concert, the first ever played on Vesak Day.
Celebrations for Buddhism’s holiest day will also feature trade fairs, visits to major Buddhist relics sites in the northern provinces of Ninh Binh and Quang Ninh provinces and sight-seeing on the UNESCO-recognised World Heritage site Ha Long Bay in Quang Ninh.
Rituals on driving flora-decorated vehicles, releasing lanterns onto water and lighting candles will also be held on this occasion.
Bui Huu Duoc, head of Buddhist Affairs Department of the Governmental Committee for Religious Affairs, said that although Vietnam has little experience in hosting such a grand celebration, he is confident of the success of the event based on overwhelming support from the public and local administrations.
IOC General Secretary, Superior Bonze Thich Nhat Tu, said preparations for the event are faring well and entering the final stage.
