VietNamNet - Vietnam supports UN-AU cooperation for peace process in Darfur
A Vietnamese representative to the United Nations, on February 8, affirmed Viet Nam’s support for the UN-African Union (AU) cooperation for the peace process in Darfur.Ambassador Hoang Chi Trung, Deputy Permanent Representative of Viet Nam to the UN, was attending the UN Security Council’s debate in New York regarding the situation in the Sudan .The ambassador also spoke highly of the efforts made by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir on the sidelines of the AU Summit in Addis Ababa on January 31 towards facilitating the deployment of the AU/UN joint operation in Darfur (UNAMID).He also reiterated Viet Nam ’s support for the full deployment of UNAMID in conformity with the mandate provided by the UN Security Council’s Resolution 1769.He said: “It is our conviction that a full and effective deployment of UNAMID in Darfur will help restore peace and stability not only in Darfur and the Sudan but also in other countries in the sub-region.”The diplomat called on all parties concerned to join negotiations in order to reach a just and lasting solution to the Darfur conflict and reaffirmed Viet Nam ’s support for the efforts made by the UN and African countries for the full and effective deployment of UNAMID in particular and in bringing about peaceful resolutions to conflicts in Africa in general.
