A thousand poor hearts get free fix
A charity programme to provide free heart surgery to patients of low economic standing from seven southern and Central Highlands provinces was launched on Feb. 2 by the Ho Chi Minh City Association of Sponsors for Poor Patients and the Medical-Pharmacy University Hospital.
The programme aims to help about 1,000 young patients from 7-17 years old from the provinces of Gia Lai, Tay Ninh, Hau Giang, An Giang, Binh Phuoc, Ca Mau, and Tra Vinh.
Nguyen Hoang Bac, the hospital's deputy director, said many of these patients may die if they are not operated on in a timely manner.
He added that all of these children were from poor families who could not afford heart surgery.
The association will co-ordinate at eight hospitals in HCM City and donors to carry out the project in 2007 and 2008. (VNA)
