Fight against drug trafficking boosted

The Ministry of Public Security is working with relevant agencies to outline a national strategy on drug abuse control from now to 2015 and through 2020.
The strategy is slated to intensify the crackdown on drug trafficking as it has recently showed signs of evolving in a more complicated manner despite a decrease in case and the number of people involved.
The number of drug trafficking cases and people involved that the drug control enforcement force brought to light in 2007 decreased by 9.5% and 12%, respectively.
However, the ministry also raised the alert on drug-related crimes involving foreign elements with those coming from not only regional countries but also from South America, Southern Europe and Africa.
In May 2007, the drug control enforcement force smashed a trans-national drug trafficking ring operating from the Golden Triangle to Cambodia, Vietnam and then Taiwan via air routes.
Along with the national strategy against drug abuse, the Ministry of Public Security has also taken part in revising and supplementing the Law on Anti-Drug Abuse and launched a project to collect and process drug-related information.
Regarding international cooperation, the ministry placed the focus on implementing anti-drug abuse agreements with Laos, Cambodia and China.
Vietnam has ratcheted up the fight against the trafficking of narcotics following the Party Politburo, the eighth tenure, issued Instruction 06 concerning the issue in 1996. (VNA)
